The lodge is made of logs and the steps you traverse as you carry your luggage in are made of wood. In the reception area is a sturdy old wooden desk. The rustic home furnishings are quaint and the cubby holes for room keys look like something out of an old Western movie. But a harsh, glaring light from fluorescent fixtures overhead leaves no shadows as nothing escapes its presence. The owner failed by not utilizing rustic lighting.
Fifteen miles away, another lodge welcomes a family into its reception area. The new guests walk into their “home” for the next seven days and are completely satisfied. The ambiance is exactly what they anticipated. Rustic home furnishings, walls, and rugs all complement each other. And the fact that the rustic lighting is not an issue is testimony to the fact that it is unobtrusive and acceptable.
The difference in the two hypothetical examples above was subtle but significant at the same time. Harsh, glaring light can easily permeate a person’s perception of an environment. Remember the old cop movies where a hood is interrogated under a bright single bulb lamp? This wasn’t an idea thought up just for the big screen–the light in the person’s face can be quite disconcerting. Over a period of time, it would wear a person down and be the impetus for the con to spill his guts. The same logic applies to lighting in a lodge or your cabin.
